Chromium
(Symbol Cr) silver-white, very hard and brittle metal. Chromium is chemically stable and is hardly oxidized under moist air. In non-oxidizing acids such as HCl it dissolves under generation of hydrogen and chromium salts, oxidizing acids hardly corrode chromium, even upon heating, due to passivation. Chromium coatings for corrosion protection and for decorative purposes are produced by electroplating and, in few cases, by CVD. Chromium steels feature high corrosion and heat stability. Cutting metals are alloys from Co, Cr, and W.
