	Plasma diffusion Collective term for processes involving the refinement of a metal’ssurface at elevated temperature by diffusion of nonmetal atoms by meansof of a plasma. The most important examples are plasma nitriding, plasmanitocarburising, plasma carburising and plasma carbonitriding. Therespective carbide or nitride phases generated on the surface are some µmthick and much harder than the untreated metal. The underlying diffusionlayer with a thickness of up to some 100 µm is also harder than the basematerial.
