	Surface oxide The surface of most metals is covered by a thin oxide layer spontaneouslyforming in an atmosphere containing oxygen and mostly retarding or evenpreventing the further oxidation of the underlying metal. Therefore,several base metals are very stable (e. g. chromium) or rather stable (e.g. aluminium) against corrosion. Strengthening of the oxide layer can beused to improve oxidation stability in several cases. The surface oxidesof virtually any metal can be removed by plasma, thereby laying the metalbare.
